College life is a unique mix of study, extracurriculars, sporting events, work, internships, parties, and the list goes on. Whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed or uncertain about how to handle student life, review the following list of college survival tips and you’ll be back on track in no time!

5.   Schedule study time— In a survey to gauge the effectiveness of college student’s study habits, researchers, Marissa Hartwig and John Dunlosky, questioned 324 undergraduates. It was found that those students considered “high performers,” were often students that dedicated specific times to their studies.

Findings from the study revealed essential survival tips for studying right. Next time pass with flying colors by applying the 3 most important habits of highly effective students:

schedule study time,

study at different times of the day,

test yourself on your knowledge.


4.  Treat your body right— As a college student, it’s important to get sufficient sleep and plenty of healthy food to eat. In fact, the amount of sleep that a student gets is key to predicting academic success. The following suggestions for better grades and a better night’s sleep come from the Student Health Advisory Council at The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor:

avoid caffeine,

squeeze in a nap,

avoid doing homework in bed,

avoid television before bed,

try to adjust your bedtime or your wake up time, whichever is easier.


Meanwhile, eating right is just as important as getting enough sleep.   Eating healthy throughout the day is linked to better grades, according to results from a University of Alberta (Canada) study. Some healthy eating tips are as follows:

eat at regular intervals,

eat breakfast every day,

snack smart,

drink lots of water.

3.  Get involved— The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE Studies) has directly linked student’s activity on campus with academic success. Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet new people and to challenge yourself. When a student is active on campus, they also tend to be more invested overall, according to findings from the NSSE. Trying out new clubs and events can also help students to discover new passions. And don’t forget, a student’s extracurricular activities can really enhance a resume!

2.  Meet new people— The college experience would not be complete without meeting new people, including professors, classmates, roommates and everyone in between. The connections you make while in college can last a lifetime, but you don’t have to love everyone that you meet. Just be nice and polite because you never know when you might interact with a classmate or professor after college.

When you’d rather be anywhere but class, try to remember that your college education isn’t free, even if you aren’t the one paying for it. Your college classes have value and it’s worth going.

If you skip out, you might miss something vital. Worse yet, depending on your university’s absence policy, playing hooky could cause you to lose a letter grade. So suck it up and go to class; you might even learn something!
